Senior Partner at Rex Attorneys and Former Tanzanian Ambassador to the UK and the USA
A career legal practitioner, Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar ended her tour of duty as Tanzania’s Ambassador to the United States of America and non-resident ambassador to Mexico in March 2013. Prior to her transfer to the United States, Mwanaidi Maajar was accredited to the Court of St. James’s as Tanzania’s High Commissioner to the UK as well as non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Ireland, between 2006 and 2010.
Mwanaidi Maajar was a founding Partner of Maajar, Rwechungura, Nguluma & Makani, Advocates, (“MRN&M”). In February 2006 MRN&M merged with another leading law firm in Tanzania, Epitome Advocates, to form REX ATTORNEYS (www.rexattorneys.co.tz) so as to provide better legal services to their largely international clientele. REX is a leading law firm in Tanzania. She heads the Natural Resources Law Practice at REX which covers energy, mining oil & gas, one of the fastest growing practices.
She has worked in the public and private sectors, previously as a Senior Legal Officer Bank of Tanzania and as Business Development Manager, Coopers & Lybrand, and the predecessor firm of Pricewaterhouse. She was a director of various public and private companies resigning when she was appointed Tanzania’s ambassador to UK in 2006.
Mwanaidi Maajar was one of the founders of Tanzania Women Lawyers’ Association (TAWLA), established in 1990, to harness the energies of women lawyers in Tanzania to assist women and children who are unable to afford legal services. TAWLA has helped thousands of women and children through its legal aid clinics to access justice. She was TAWLA Chairperson between 2001 and 2003.
Mwanaidi Maajar is currently chair of the Tanzania Mozambique Centre for Foreign Relations, chair of Vodacom Tanzania Limited, a leading mobile provider and chair of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a leading conservation area where human and animals share the same ecosystem. Ngorongoro is known as the Seventh Wonder of the world. She is also member of the Board of Bank of Africa a fast growing regional bank and the International Consultant for the D Group, an international consulting Group based in London, having taken on the role after the retirement of Sir. Andy Chande, a respected Tanzanian business man.
In respect of social responsibility, Mwanaidi Maajar is chair of the Hassan Maajar Trust (HMT) a charity established in July 2011 in memory of her late son, to help improve the learning environment in schools in Tanzania. HMT’s flagship program, A Desk for Every Child, aims to ensure that every child in Tanzania has a desk.
