Richard is a barrister whose public international law practice includes international criminal law, the law of armed conflict, international human rights law and international refugee law.
Richard worked for a number of years on the “Government II” trial and then appeal at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, during which time he lived in Tanzania. He was also involved in a successful application for an arrest warrant against a former foreign government minister for war crimes. Richard can be instructed before the International Criminal Court, having been accepted onto the Court’s list of lawyers.
Richard has a long-standing domestic and international human rights practice. He recently appeared before the UK Supreme Court in an important prisoners’ rights case. Richard is instructed in a number of high-profile pending applications to the European Court of Human Rights concerning fair trial rights and freedom from torture. He has provided human rights training in Uganda for Avocats Sans Frontières. Richard has particular expertise in inquests and claims arising out of deaths in State custody.
Richard has many years of experience in international refugee law. He has represented clients from across the African continent in their asylum and immigration claims before the UK courts. He was instructed by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in a successful intervention in the English Court of Appeal.
